This is the epitome of understated mastery. A collection of German works for solo violin! Helwig Zack is a veteran German violinist who served as first concertmaster of the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra—a pioneer of the period-instrument approach in Germany—from 1982 to 1995. He is currently active as a soloist and professor at the Würzburg University of Music. This collection of unaccompanied works by J.S. Bach, Reger, Hindemith, and Stamer traces the history of German “unaccompanied violin works” from the Baroque era to the present. In addition to Bach’s masterpieces, he is sure to deliver the understated, refined performances that only a veteran with extensive experience in the works of Hindemith and Reger can achieve. Stamer’s work is a new piece dedicated to Zack, and this recording marks its world premiere. Tokyo M-Plus
