John Lord (1941–), a former member of the legendary British hard rock band Deep Purple, made his debut as a “classical” composer with *Durham Concerto* (AV2145), a work commissioned to commemorate the 175th anniversary of Durham University. John Lord—who served as Deep Purple’s keyboardist from the band’s formation through its 1976 breakup, and again from its 1984 reunion until 2002, before making the transition to classical composer in 2002—presents a new work following *Durham Concerto*. This beautiful suite is woven together by “flute,” “piano,” and a “string orchestra.” This “To Notice Such Things” is not merely an orchestral suite; it is a special work composed as a tribute to Sir John Mortimer (1923–2009), a longtime friend of John Lord who passed away in 2009. The orchestra is the prestigious Royal Liverpool Philharmonic; the conductor is Clark Randall, who has conducted a wide range of genres as the conductor of the RNCM Wind Orchestra; and the piano is performed by the composer himself, John Lord! Given that his previous work, “The Durham Concerto,” debuted in the top 10 of the UK classical charts, this album is sure to generate buzz among fans of classical music, John Lord, and Deep Purple alike.
