Brazilian Hero António Meneses! A Collection of Cello Concertos by Haydn & Pereira! António Meneses, the Brazilian hero recognized by the great Karajan. His sixth recording for Avie—which began with his second recording of Bach’s “Suite for Unaccompanied Cello” (AV0052)—marks Menezes’ first concerto recording in quite some time (and his first for Avie!): a collection of cello concertos by Haydn and Pereira, performed with him conducting himself! A seasoned virtuoso who won first prize at the 1977 Munich International Competition and the 1982 Tchaikovsky International Competition, and who has also been an active member of the Bozar Trio since 1998, Menezes chose to perform as both soloist and conductor in order to fully reflect his own interpretation in the performance. His accompanying ensemble, the Northern Sinfonia, has demonstrated great agility and flexibility in performances with Imogen Cooper and Zetmeyer, so we can look forward to a high degree of synchronization with Menezes’s cello. In addition, Menezes has chosen to pair Haydn’s two cello concertos with the world premiere recording of “Concertino.” Please take your time to savor this bold and challenging program—pairing Haydn and Pereira—as Menezes, the “Emperor of the Cello,” both plays and conducts!
