Although he has shown exceptional passion for Wagner, this marks his first recorded performance of the composer’s music. Because *Parsifal* deals with the legend of the Holy Grail and has strong religious overtones, it was never performed during the Soviet era; it was revived by Gergiev in 1997—80 years after its last performance—following the collapse of the Soviet Union. Although it is a lengthy and complex work characteristic of Wagner’s late period, Gergiev has made it his specialty, staging it around the world to great acclaim. In Japan, too, a concert performance of Act 3 is scheduled for February 2011, and anticipation is running high. This CD, of course, features the complete work. A stellar ensemble of Gergiev’s trusted musicians—including René Pape and the renowned Lithuanian soprano Violetta Urmana—delivers an exceptionally passionate performance.
