This is a record of the concert series "This is Rattle" that Rattle gave on the occasion of his appointment as Music Director of the LSO. Performing three works in one evening is a feat in itself, but the LSO is full of virtuoso musicians, and the intensity and perfection of the performance is extraordinary. This is a performance to watch out for! The Firebird, Petrushka, and The Rite of Spring were composed between 1909 and 1913, and all were premiered by the Ballets Russes, but everyone agrees that they remain outstandingly popular orchestral works. This is a record of the LSO, a group of skilled musicians, performing it in one night under Rattle's baton. Moreover, when the concert was one of a series of concerts that drew the world's attention as London celebrated Rattle's finally being appointed as their music director, it is easy to imagine that the level of enthusiasm in the performance was not half as high as expected.The beauty of "The Firebird," the vibrancy of "Petrushka," and the intense, unwavering rhythms of "The Rite of Spring" are a series of moving and exciting performances! Rattle's "The Rite of Spring" has been released six times: by the English National Youth Orchestra (1977), City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (1987), Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra (2003, 2009 (video), 2012), and LSO (2015 (video)). Rattle said of "The Rite of Spring": "I have been conducting this work since I was 19 years old. I've been conducting this piece since I was 19 years old. It reminds me of what the impact of something completely new can be like, and it remains a great challenge and one of the most exciting pieces to perform.
