This recording of Beethoven’s Violin Concerto features Eberle’s enchanting tone, full of elegant radiance; the tenderness and charm evident in every phrase; and, needless to say, her flawless technique. The cadenza, composed by Wittmann, is also noteworthy. Rattle conducts. Eberle first captured the world’s attention in 2006 when she performed Beethoven’s concerto with the Berlin Philharmonic—and Rattle was the conductor on that occasion as well. It’s safe to say this recording marks the realization of a dream for Eberle, working with her ultimate musical partner. From the very opening, where Rattle draws a warm yet bright tone from the LSO, anticipation builds—and this recording showcases her charm in the most exquisite way possible. It goes without saying that Eberle’s solo performance is superb, but what really stands out is the cadenza. She performs the cadenza written by Jörg Widmann specifically for this recording featuring Eberle, Rattle, and the LSO! It is a virtuosic cadenza that incorporates a variety of playing techniques while layering motifs skillfully crafted from Beethoven’s original material. Following the example of the memorable cadenza—which features a dialogue between the timpani and the violin solo, written by Beethoven when he arranged this violin concerto for piano—the timpani make an appearance here as well, but here, a double bass is also added, and at times there are passages featuring all three instruments—this rich and fulfilling cadenza is a must-hear! And above all, Eberle’s performance is incredibly vibrant. The B-side features a violin concerto Beethoven wrote around 1790. Only fragments of the “Allegro con brio” (259 measures) remain; while it is sometimes performed in a reconstructed form, this recording presents the work as Beethoven wrote it—including the unfinished sections. One is captivated by the beauty of the lyrical melodies played by Eberle. Throughout the entire disc, Eberle’s singing is filled with unparalleled beauty and elegance, and her flawless technique is simply overwhelming.
