Description:
Reich by the Percussionists of the London Symphony Orchestra! From the popular LSO independent label, which offers outstanding performances in excellent sound quality, comes Reich's percussion works. The performers are, of course, members of the London Symphony Orchestra. Recorded live at LSO St. Lukes, where various concerts, rehearsals, workshops, and other events are held. Clapping Music" is a hand-clapping piece by two performers, one clapping a basic rhythm in 12/8 time while the other claps the same rhythm one beat at a time. Music for Pieces of Wood" is played on five wood blocks (or claves), designated A, B, C#, D#, and D# (on the octave). While the highest wood block keeps the tempo ticking like a metronome from beginning to end, other players sequentially join in with new rhythms, and the sound changes. The rhythm of "Clapping Music" is also used. Sextet" consists of 3 marimbas, 2 vibraphones, 2 bass drums, antique cymbals, tom-toms, 2 pianos, and 2 synthesizers. The many keyboard percussion instruments add variety to the sound, and the chords used are very colorful. The vibraphone is played with a bow in addition to the usual mallet technique, creating a unique harmonic effect. The entire piece is divided into five unbroken movements, with an arching ABCBA structure that slows down as it moves toward the center. The melody is then brought to a climax with A, which is a rhythmic feast again. King International
