Description:
Pappano's Masterful Performance From the relentless energy of "Mars" to the blissful world of "Jupiter" The mystical sound of the female chorus shines in this superb recording of The Planets! Also includes Buxtehude's work, an homage to Tristan and Isolde! Pappano & LSO's new recording, which powerfully impressed audiences with their exceptional rapport during their September 2024 Japan tour, programs two British masterpieces. In Holst, Pappano's magic explodes, filling every note with an aura of joy. From the relentless energy of Mars, the Bringer of War, to the blissful realm of Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity, the universe unfolding under Pappano's magical baton is truly infinite. The journey concludes enveloped in the mystery of Neptune, with the Tenebrae Choir's wordless, otherworldly chorus resonating. This performance truly showcases Pappano's exceptional handling of vocal music. Sir Arnold Bax's Tintagel is a symphonic poem that grandly depicts the rugged coastline of Cornwall. Inspired by his 1917 visit to the legendary castle of Tintagel, Bax expressed the winds howling off the cliffs, ancient history, and mythology through music that undulates like the sea itself. At the time of composing this work, Bux was married but was in the midst of a passionate affair with another woman and had traveled to Cornwall. It is a work paying homage to Wagner and Tristan, employing Wagnerian stylistic elements, making frequent use of undulating melodies, and including references to Tristan und Isolde set in Cornwall. Sir Arnold Bax (1883-1953) was a prolific composer who represented early 20th century Britain, but his works are relatively unknown today. Born into a wealthy family, he was free from financial constraints and could devote himself to his creative work. He was particularly fascinated by Wagner, R. Bogner-Strauß, and Debussy, and was also passionate about Irish literature, including Yeats. Although he was exempted from military service during World War I due to health reasons, he was prolific as a composer, producing works influenced by Celtic themes and Slavic culture inspired by his pre-war visits to Russia and Ukraine. His style was essentially late Romantic, full of chromatic harmonies and rich melodies. His personal life was complicated, with the shadows of several women looming over his marriage. He was appointed Royal Music Director and also composed the music for the film Oliver Twist, among other diverse activities.
