The LSO is celebrating the launch of the LSO Live label with "Elijah," one of the three most popular oratorio masterpieces in music history. Elijah" was first performed at Birmingham Town Hall in 1846. The performance was a great success, but Mendelssohn made alterations and completed the final version the following year. It was so well received that it was called "The Elijah" along with "The Messiah" (Handel). Pappano brought out the dramatic character of Mendelssohn's oratorio on a grand scale, and the overture that follows the opening section is like an operatic overture. The opening overture is like an operatic overture, foreshadowing the drama to come. The numerous arias are performed by singers who Pappano approved of, and it is as if we are listening to a masterpiece of arias from an opera of the highest quality. One is reminded that these are not musical characters, which Mendelssohn struggled to achieve when composing for English texts, but dramas by people who actually live in the biblical world. The chorus of the full fugue, with Handel in mind, is no less a realization of Mendelssohn's masterful brushwork. This performance is in English, as was the premiere. The widow, Angel, is played by Langwanasha, who also made a splash in Pappano's last tour of Japan as director of the Royal Opera House (2024). The role of Elijah is played by Canada's Gerald Finley.In addition to operas and recitals, Pappano is also active in contemporary works, for which he has written works by Turnage, Saariaho, and Rautavaara, among others. The LSO, led by Pappano, and his excellent singing team will give a definitive masterful performance of "Elijah" that will be highly anticipated! (King International)
