Description:

Gardiner's Mendelssohn Series "Reformation" & Overture "Louis Brass" and "Silent Sea and Pleasant Voyage" SACD Hybrid + Pure Audio Blu-ray Disc Edition! The second in the Mendelssohn Series with Sir John Eliot Gardiner conducting the London Symphony Orchestra, Symphony No. 5, recorded in October 2014, is Gardiner's second recording in 18 years, having previously conducted the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra in 1996 on a live recording. This is Gardiner's second recording of the symphony after an 18-year absence. The Fifth Symphony, known as the "Reformation," commemorates the 300th anniversary of the drafting of the Augsburg Confession of Faith (1530), a key event in the history of the Reformation for Protestants and the Lutherans, of whom Mendelssohn himself was a devoted follower, It was composed in 1830.The Reformation" is characterized by the fact that the music itself brings us into contact with the inner meaning of the title of the piece and gives us a sense of inspiration for the creation of the piece. The finale motif is based on Luther's famous chorale "God is my fortress". Both overtures are inspired by literary works. Quiet Sea and Pleasant Voyage," based on two short poems by Goethe, a German writer and friend of the composer, is a concert overture that describes a sailor's voyage, beginning with a gentle, deep adagio that eventually leads to a triumphant return to port. The two-part structure, which deals with the contrasting expressions of the sea, is also skillful, and the music is beautiful and romantic.Commissioned by the Theater Leipzig as an overture to the play of the same name by Victor Hugo, "Ruy Blas" is set in the medieval court of Spain and depicts the tragedy of a commoner man who, through an unscrupulous plot, is approached by a nobleman posing as a nobleman, but ends up taking his own life as a martyr to true love for the queen, The dramatic tone of the piece is very moving. Gardiner, who has established a reputation for his Bach performances, has also made ambitious efforts with Beethoven, Schumann, and Brahms, and he seems to have a very good affinity with Mendelssohn. The London Symphony Orchestra, with whom we have a long-standing relationship of trust, has been employed to produce this recording. The producer, Nicholas Parker, is a violinist by profession, and is familiar with Gardiner from their recordings with English Baroque Soloists.Gardiner conducted the London Symphony Orchestra in Stravinsky's "The Prodigal's Progress," which won a Grammy Award for Best Opera Recording in 2000, so the recording is in good hands. As with the first album in the series, this release will also be available on a Pure Audio Blu-ray disc containing the same performances, in addition to the traditional SACD hybrid disc. This is a very welcome addition to the high-spec format, which can be easily enjoyed on your Blu-ray disc player and has been very well received by audiophiles. King International Inc.
