Scriabin (1872-1915)

Description:

As if Wagner or Mahler? The sum total of Gergiev's art, a Scriabin SACD hybrid disc of astonishing depth. Gergiev and the London Symphony Orchestra performed all five of Scriabin's symphonies for the first time in his career in March and April 2014. The first release last fall (2015) was a coupling of No. 3 and "Poem of the Laws (No. 4)" (LSO0771), which was much talked about. Both works are from Scriabin's early period, but in addition to the influence of his great Wagnerianism as a young man, the expanded scale of the symphonies and the mobilization of even vocal music are reminiscent of Mahler's works. The symphony No. 1 is the culmination of Gergiev's musical strengths, and it is rare to find a work more suited to him. Symphony No. 1 was composed between 1899 and 1900, and is a large work of 50 minutes in six movements. The fifth movement features solo mezzo-soprano and baritone voices, and the last movement features a mixed chorus. The lyrics are Scriabin's own hymn to the arts in Russian, full of Mahlerian resonance and fullness, but not often performed due to its large size. Gergiev's performance of this piece finally makes its appearance. The young Scriabin's unique and intense lyricism and the mysterious light-filled world lead to a moving climax. Symphony No. 2 is a purely instrumental work in five movements. The third movement, which describes the endless chirping of birds, as if anticipating the Messiaen, is unique. The finale is Russian music in the style of Wagner, the height of coolness. Although it was heavily criticized at the time of its premiere, Gergiev's performance reminds us that this is a fascinating symphony in the Tchaikovsky tradition. King International
