Description:
SACD hybrid disc. Gergiev, who is passionate about Berlioz, says, "The original style and contemporary sound of this work captivate me. The second series of Gergiev's "Harold in Italia" and "Cleopatra's Death," like the first "Symphonie fantastique," are SACD releases from the highly successful "Berlioz Project" that Gergiev conducted with the London Symphony Orchestra in the fall of 2013, and the same combination was used in the performances. Harold in Italia" takes the form of a poem by Byron, "Childe Harold's Pilgrimage," in which "the sensitive protagonist (solo viola) describes his thoughts and feelings about the sights, sounds, and history of various places. The work is different from the "Symphonie fantastique" which has the same title, but it has an autobiographical character, as Berlioz is very self-conscious.The use of Harold's fixed ideas, which are inherited from the viola solo throughout the entire work, is another characteristic of the "Symphonie fantastique". Antoine Tamousti, who plays the viola solo here, is acclaimed as "the perfect soloist for 'Harold in Italy'" (Scotsman, April 2013). In April 2011, Tamousti recorded "Harold in Italia" with the Musiciens du Palais du Louvre conducted by Minkowski, so this is his second recording in about two and a half years. Incidentally, Tamusti's mentor, Tabea Zimmermann, also recorded "Harold in Italia" live with the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Colin Davis in February 2003 (LSO0040). Gergiev performed "Harold in Italia" with Bashmet in a live video recording of the Mariinsky Theatre's New Year's Concert in January 2007, and also performed the entire work with Bashmet in a performance with the Mariinsky Orchestra. In the demonstration with the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra, he also performed the complete work with Bashmet, showing that he has long had a great passion for this work. Gergiev's "Harold in Italia," which is finally available in its entirety as software, is a must-have along with the "Symphonie fantastique," thanks to the "perfect Harold" Tamestit and the London Symphony Orchestra, which has a wealth of experience in Berlioz performances. The cantata "Cleopatra's Death", written for the Prix de Rome, was not selected due to its overly innovative style and radical content, but it can be said that Berlioz's character is already overflowing in such aspects of the work. Karen Cargill, a mezzo-soprano from Scotland, was previously employed by LSO Live for the recording of "The Childhood of Christ" by Colin Davis. Blessed with a large and beautiful voice, she handles the dramatic expression required here with aplomb. In April 2012, Cargill recorded the same two numbers with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra conducted by Titiati. Gergiev also recorded live with Borodina and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra in May 2003, so this is the first re-recording in about a decade and a half. King International
