Gergiev conducts the London Symphony Orchestra in a new Berlioz series. The first two, "Symphonie fantastique" and the overture "Waverley," are live recordings of performances from the Berlioz Project, which the duo made the centerpiece of their season in the fall of 2013. Gergiev's second recording of the Symphonie fantastique was made in 2003 when he conducted the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra in a session recording for Philips, so this is the first re-recording in ten years. As is well known, Berlioz is one of the repertoire in which the London Symphony Orchestra is most adept, having worked with the composer's expert Sir Colin Davis for more than half a century.In the process of building an extensive discography, the London Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Davis recorded the "Symphonie fantastique" twice (1963 session and live in 2000), and the performance was so convincing that one could feel the pride of having mastered its musical language. Incidentally, during this period, the London Symphony Orchestra also produced several unique performances of the "Symphonie fantastique" with various conductors, including Boulez in 1967, Previn in 1975 and 1976, Païta in 1977, Frémaux in 1988, and Sklovaczewski in 1989. Given this background, the meeting with the London Symphony Orchestra here is very significant, and it can be said to be a great strength for Gergiev, who also has a great deal of passion for Berlioz.In an interview conducted prior to the performance, Gergiev spoke enthusiastically about the appeal of Berlioz's music.
