Haydn (1732-1809)
Description:
In 2009, the year of Haydn's bicentennial, LSO Live presents a powerful recording of "The Creation" by the great Haydn conductor, Davis. This live performance was held in October 2007 as one of the highlights of the master's 80th birthday season. The Creation" is Haydn's masterpiece in both scale and content, inspired by Handel's "Messiah" and other great works during his two stays in England in his later years. Using "Genesis" and "Psalms" from the Old Testament and Milton's "Paradise Lost" as its subject matter, the oratorio depicts the seven days of creation in three parts, from the first to the fourth day of creation by God, the fifth and sixth days when creatures appear, and the appearance of Adam and Eve, in chronological order. The work is particularly popular in Europe and the United States because of its straightforwardly Christian worldview, the charm of the animals depicted in an easy-to-understand manner that could be described as painterly, and the fact that the large chorus is mobilized to make the piece a great listening experience. The Creation" is therefore a fitting choice for Davis, who has been actively engaged in vocal works with great skill and enthusiasm. As a special feature of this performance, Davis chose a double-winged arrangement for the violins. The 1st violin, cello, bass, viola, 2nd violin, and double bass were placed from the lower part of the stage, right in front of the conductor, and the double bass was placed in the upper part of the stage. The approach is clearly based on a period approach. In addition to the London Symphony Chorus, another LSO-caliber group whose "excellence is so great that it is not often emphasized" (ClassicalSource.com), the soloists are notable for their stellar lineup of singers, both in name and in reality. Henschel is known for his Raphael on the Christie disc and Simon in Jacobs' "Four Seasons". The British pride Bostridge, who will sing the role of the same name at the Salzburg Festival 2009 under Minkowski's baton, and Davis's favorite, Matthews. And Davis's favorite, Matthews, is also in the lineup. As for the timing of this live performance, it is worth mentioning that it was featured in Mozart's "Requiem" (LSO.0127, LSO.0627), which was performed in September as Davis' 80th Gala Evening, Tippett's "We are the Children of the Age" (LSO.0670) in December, and the world premiere of MacMillan's "St. John Passion" (LSO.0671) the following April, which was also featured in the previous concert. The fact that the world premiere of MacMillan's "St. John Passion" (LSO.0671) in April 2008 is the latest in a long line of such performances is not to be overlooked.
