A Tribute from Europe to America, and from America to Europe This is the third installment produced by Christian Järvi, the second son of the Järvi family, following “Balkan Fever” and “Journey to the Baltic Sea.” After exploring the south and north of Europe, this program focuses on the connection with the West—that is, America. Richard Strauss’s “Domestic Symphony” is said to have been composed for its 1904 premiere at Carnegie Hall in New York, and it features four saxophones—a choice made with America in mind. While attention often focuses on aspects such as the work’s depiction of a married couple’s nightlife, Christian Järvi draws attention to its groundbreaking exploration of American and jazz-inspired soundscapes. Meanwhile, “A Tone Parallel to Harlem” by the “King of Jazz,” Duke Ellington, was composed aboard a ship bound for a European tour between May and June 1950. It is said that Ellington, in his mature period, composed this piece in the style of Richard Strauss’s tone poems; indeed, it is a jazz version of Richard Strauss, and one cannot help but be amazed by Ellington’s incredible skill. Richard Strauss’s “Symphony of the Family” and Duke Ellington’s “A Tone Parallel to Harlem” share the commonality of using music to depict the lives of European high society and the lower classes in New York, respectively; both convey the very breath of people striving to live their lives to the fullest, and I take my hat off to the genius of both masters. I am drawn in by Christian Järvi’s passionate conducting. Stravinsky’s “Prelude for a Jazz Band” is less a European take on jazz than an imitation of Black music, and I am impressed by Stravinsky’s ability to capture its essence. King International
