Michael Tilson Thomas (MTT) and the San Francisco Symphony (SFS), a prestigious orchestra from the U.S. West Coast. This new release from the golden duo—winners of numerous Grammy Awards—is a collection of exquisite miniatures featuring masterpieces for orchestra. A major highlight of Henri Littorf’s “Scherzo” is the participation of pianist Yuja Wang, who also performed with MTT and the SFS during their 2012 tour of Japan. Although the “Scherzo” is actually the second movement of the Fourth Symphonic Concerto, it is an exhilarating piece in which the piano—brimming with virtuosity—takes center stage from start to finish, making it a popular piece often performed as a standalone work. Also featured are “The Flower Chapter,” originally conceived as the second movement of Mahler’s Symphony No. 1; Debussy’s “Slower than Lento,” which the composer himself arranged from a solo piano piece into an orchestral version; “The Orcotts” from the monumental “Concord Symphony”—an orchestration by Henry Brant of Ives’s “Concord Sonata” (Piano Sonata No. 2), known for its technical difficulty, “The Sad Waltz,” a popular piece from Sibelius’s incidental music for the play *Kuolema* that is often performed on its own; “The Procession of Bacchus” by Delibes, which enjoys widespread popularity from orchestras to wind ensembles; and Rachmaninoff’s “Vocalise”—a super-classic that has been transcribed from a song and performed in various forms.
