The Mahler Cycle by Michael Tilson Thomas and the San Francisco Symphony (SFS) continues to garner worldwide acclaim and praise for both its phenomenal orchestral performances and superb sound quality. Several years after its 2001 debut, the MTT & SFS Mahler Cycle has finally reached its final stages, with the 10th and latest release being *Das Lied von der Erde*! For this recording of *Das Lied von der Erde*, MTT & SFS have chosen a baritone for the solo parts in the even-numbered movements, rather than the alto typically used. Although Mahler himself specified that the solo parts in the even-numbered movements should be performed by “an alto or a baritone,” performances and recordings featuring a baritone soloist are far less common than those with an alto soloist; thus, MTT & SFS’s *Das Lied von der Erde* is sure to generate significant buzz not only as a new definitive recording of the work but also as a new recording of *Das Lied von der Erde* featuring a tenor and baritone as soloists. The lineup features a star-studded cast, including Thomas Hampson, one of the world’s leading baritones of our time, and Stuart Skelton, a tenor highly trusted by the maestro Mackerras and in great demand at opera houses around the globe. Furthermore, the renowned duo of Andreas Neubronner and Peter Langer—who have handled the recording for nearly all of MTT & SFS’s Mahler cycle—are back in full force for *Das Lied von der Erde*!
