Brattleboro, Vermont post-punk band Zas Love, who leaped onto the national/UK stage with their debut album. All Pleasure, a gorgeous second album filled with soul-nourishing pleasure and euphoria, is released on Captured Tracks. All Pleasure emerges from a period of dizzying growth and transformation for the band. Vocalist/guitarist Echo Mars (they/them) and drummer Lu Racine (he/they) were still reeling from the massive success of their 2022 debut album, Memorial, when they began work on the album. The album, a lush and elegant post-punk affair, won praise from The FADER, NME, and The Guardian, and catapulted them from quiet Brattleboro to stages across the United States and the United Kingdom. However, founding bassist Nathaniel van Osdol has left the band.Meanwhile, longtime musical partners, new bassist Ally Juleen (she/they) and guitarist/keyboardist Shane Blank (he/him), moved to a rural Vermont town a month before recording the sequel to their cult He uprooted his life to join the band. 'We were all coming together to create something new, to take a new step forward. We've all been making music for a while and have faced its harsher, less fun side," says Mars, and when Mars converted a barn in the woods into a recording studio the band calls a "hobbit hole," they focused on one simple rule. If we didn't have fun, we wouldn't do it," Mars says. What emerged from that simple mission was a stunningly gorgeous album. Full of sweeping melodies and unusual stylistic twists, it will surprise listeners who only know the chorus-drenched, '80s-style psychedelia of their first album. (1/2)
