Gatti & RCO Present Mahler’s Symphony No. 4 A live recording made just before their 2017 Japan tour! This is the second installment in the Mahler cycle led by Daniele Gatti, who was appointed the 7th Chief Conductor of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in 2016. In November 2017, he made his first tour of Japan since taking office, thrilling Japanese audiences. The program features Symphony No. 4—one of the so-called “Horn Trilogy,” following the previous release, *Resurrection*—which was also performed during the Japan tour. The recording is a live performance from November 8 and 9, just before the tour. The Concertgebouw Orchestra’s tradition of performing Mahler is, of course, well-known. With Mahler himself having conducted the orchestra and maintained a deep connection with it, the Concertgebouw possesses a special tradition of Mahler interpretation, and great expectations surround this Mahler cycle taking place at its home venue—one of the world’s leading concert halls. Not only does Gatti demonstrate the delicate sensibility and solid structural control he showcased during his Japan tour, but I am also in awe of his skill in fully unleashing his exceptional musical expression—ranging from breathtaking pianissimo to a majestic and dynamic sound. Gatti’s confident conducting, coupled with the orchestra’s skill in responding to it, was truly impressive. The soloist for the fourth movement is soprano Julia Kreiter, who had to cancel her appearance in Japan due to illness. This is a crucial part of the piece that underpins its overall impression, and Kreiter’s clear, beautiful voice resounds triumphantly as she sings “Life in Heaven.” King International
