Description:
The Royal Concertgebouw Woodwinds, featuring Bynon on flute, Navarro on oboe, and Patey on clarinet, is a superb chamber music album on SACD hybrid format. Following two albums by the Royal Concertgebouw Brass (RCO 07002 and RCO 14010) featuring the golden brass section, RCO Live now releases a remarkable album by the orchestra's prized woodwind members. Most of the members of the prestigious Concertgebouw Orchestra are traditionally as keen on chamber music as they are on orchestral endeavors, and the woodwind section is no exception. In the past, ensembles such as the Concertgebouw Sextet (1909-37) and the Danzi Quintet (1958-78) have enjoyed success both in the Netherlands and internationally. This album is a tribute to that tradition, featuring works by Janacek, who was inspired by Roussel's Divertissement; Martineau, who studied with Roussel, whom he admired; Poulenc, whose masterpiece is also modeled on Roussel's Divertissement; and Vélez, whose early works are heavily influenced by the folk music of his native Hungary. The works on this disc are all from the important repertoire of this genre, written in the 20th century, and include works by Veresh, whose early works are strongly influenced by the folk music of his native Hungary. The principal players, including Bynon on flute, Navarro on oboe, Patey on clarinet, and Nunez on bassoon, are all in fine form. The ensemble's breath is perfect, and the performance is superb.
