Jansons & the Concertgebouw Orchestra Mahler’s Symphony No. 4 Featuring Leshman as soloist, new live recording from February 2015 SACD hybrid disc. This album features Maris Jansons conducting the Concertgebouw Orchestra in a performance of Mahler’s Symphony No. 4. Jansons recently released a live video recording of the same work with the same Concertgebouw Orchestra (Concertgebouw Orchestra Live Recordings 1990–2014 / RCO15002), but this performance features a different time period and soloist; it was recorded live in February 2015, a little over a month after that video release. The highlight of the much-anticipated final movement is the casting of the renowned German soprano Dorothea Leshman. With a rich track record in German lieder, particularly Schubert, and a deep understanding of Mahler’s songs, Leshman seems an ideal choice, given Mahler’s unique compositional style, in which songs and symphonies share musical ideas, are mutually linked, and present multifaceted aspects. At the same time, it will be interesting to compare this performance with Jansons’ previous recording featuring the coloratura soprano Prohaska. Incidentally, Leshman had previously recorded this piece in January 2004 with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra conducted by Harding, making this a re-recording after an 11-year hiatus. The Mahler series by Jansons and the Concertgebouw Orchestra, which began with Symphony No. 6 in 2005, has garnered acclaim for its exceptional recordings made at the Concertgebouw’s Main Hall—known for its superb acoustics—all of which were produced by the Polyhymnia team led by Everett Porter, so we can expect another high-quality result this time as well.
