Bernstein cited “The Young People’s Concerts” as one of the “works” he was most proud of when looking back on his life. Bernstein launched “The Young People’s Concerts” with the New York Philharmonic in 1958. The concerts, performed at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center, became a series and were broadcast nationwide during prime time on CBS to children across the United States. Bernstein served as the series’ producer, conductor, and host, and the series ran for a total of 53 episodes until 1972. Bernstein explained classical music to children in a fun and easy-to-understand way, often playing the piano himself, and provided engaging commentary that appealed not only to children but also to adults. This release includes episodes 1 through 17 of the series, as well as the first three episodes from the “Young Performers” series, featuring young musicians. The program covers a wide range of topics, including American music, concertos, and even jazz. It features entertaining stories designed to spark children’s curiosity, such as careful explanations of musical terminology and introductions to the unique characteristics of folk music, linking them to the languages and cultural traits of the respective peoples.
