Description:

Catalani's last opera, "La Walie," with romantic music by the Vienna Symphony Orchestra led by Orozco-Estrada and Polish soprano Isabella Matula in the powerful title role, November 2021 at the Theater an der Wien, 19th century Italian composer Alfredo Catalani (1854-1893)'s masterpiece and last opera, La Walie. Although rarely performed, the aria "Ebben? Ne andro lontana" from Act I is often sung alone and is widely known. The famous conductor Toscanini held Catalani in such high esteem that he named his daughter Walie after the opera's heroine. Often classified as a verismo opera, but rather influenced by Wagner, German Romanticism, and the operas of Massenet's contemporaries, the orchestra is colorfully instrumental and nuanced in its harmonies.Catalani wrote the title role for the Romanian soprano Haliklea Dalcre, then known as the "Carpathian Nightingale. She also sang the title role in the premiere of Puccini's "Tosca". In this production, Isabella Matula from Poland gives a powerful performance. The Vienna Symphony Orchestra, led by Andrés Orozco-Estrada, will beautifully render Catalani's dramatic music. Based on Wilhelmine von Hillern's novel "Walleye the Vulture" (1873), the story is about a young woman who does not fit the gender norms of the time. Her only friend is a tame vulture. Raised by her father as a boy in the harsh Tyrolean wilderness, Walleye was uncompromising, and when her father tried to make her quite with a man she did not love, unlike other opera heroines of the time, she was strong-willed enough not to comply and run away to the mountains. Catalani also painted a detailed picture of human emotional processes without using music to depict the scenery and customs of the Swiss Tyrol region where the opera was set, except for the Edelweiss song at the beginning of the opera. This production is directed by Czech-born Barbora Horáková Joly. The brutal cold and harshness of the Alps are depicted in the images, and the Alpine mountains are represented by steel scaffolding. In the fourth act, when Walleye is immersed in his imaginary world, the cold and cruel landscape is depicted in such a way that the boundary between reality and fiction becomes blurred.
