2018 Production at the Chicago Lyric Opera Choreographed and Directed by the Master Noverre *Orfeo ed Euridice* Founded in 1954, the Chicago Lyric Opera is one of the three major opera houses in the United States, alongside the Metropolitan Opera and the San Francisco Opera. This video features Gluck’s *Orfeo ed Euridice*, which premiered in 1762 and became a banner of opera reform, as performed by the Chicago Lyric Opera in 2018. This production used the Paris version, which features extensive ballet sequences; in the original Vienna premiere, the role of Orfeo—originally sung by a castrato—had been rewritten for a tenor. A highlight of this production is that world-renowned choreographer John Neumeier took on all aspects—choreography, direction, set design, costumes, and lighting—in a collaboration with the Joffrey Ballet of Chicago. Although the Paris version features extensive orchestral passages, Harry Bicket—a leading figure in the British early music scene—delivers a captivating performance through his precise early music approach. Furthermore, ballet dancers perform even during sections without choreography, fully bringing Neumeier’s vision to life. The role of Orfeo is played by Russian-born tenor Dmitri Korchak. It is a role with extensive stage time that demands a high level of technical skill, putting his abilities to the test; however, Korchak delivers a superb performance, showcasing Orfeo’s anguish with his silky high notes and elegant stage presence. Adriana Kushman, as Eurydice, also embodies Neumeier’s direction with her body and captivates the audience with her supple, beautiful voice.
