Zeffirelli’s acclaimed production of *Il Trovatore*, which made headlines for the joint performance by the married couple Netrebko and Eyvazov The open-air opera festival, held at the “Arena di Verona”—the site of an ancient Roman amphitheater—takes place every summer over a period of 10 weeks. Located in the heart of the city, the “Arena” has a capacity of 16,000. As the world’s largest open-air opera theater, it has hosted opera stars such as Maria Callas on its stage. This production is Verdi’s mid-career masterpiece, ≪Il Trovatore≫, which was staged in July 2019. It generated significant buzz for the on-stage collaboration between husband and wife Anna Netrebko and Yusif Eyvazov, as well as for the renowned production by Franco Zeffirelli, one of Italy’s most celebrated directors. Zeffirelli, also known for directing the film *Romeo and Juliet* starring Olivia Hussey, staged this production in Verona—the very setting of that film. However, Zeffirelli passed away on June 15, 2019, just before the music festival was set to begin. He was 96 years old. Netrebko sang the role of Leonora. Her dramatic vocal quality and effortless mastery of technically demanding phrases, combined with a voice that resonated with supreme beauty, made her the ideal choice. Manrico is sung by Ayvazov, who possesses a rich vocal volume and an outstanding stage presence. Furthermore, Zeffirelli’s stage direction, with its extraordinary scale, envelops the magnificent open-air theater in Verona in a wave of profound emotion. Also, despite being an open-air venue, the excellent acoustics of the Arena di Verona—which allow you to enjoy the singers’ voices without microphones—are a must-hear. You can savor this feast of melody and voice, the very essence of Italian opera, with a cast of the highest caliber. The story of *Il Trovatore* is set in 15th-century Spain. Manrico, a troubadour (trovatore), is in love with Leonora, a lady-in-waiting at court. However, Count Luna is also in love with Leonora; upon discovering this, the count flies into a rage, captures Manrico, and has him executed. It is later revealed, however, that Manrico was his long-lost brother. Azucena, who harbored a grudge against the Count’s family, exacts her revenge, and the Count meets his end in a state of terror and despair. King International
