Description:
Goldschmidt's opera about the tragic beauty Beatrice Cenci is now available for the first time on video, live from the 2018 Bregenz Festival! Born in 1903 to a Jewish family in Hamburg, Goldschmidt was a young conductor and composer, active in Berlin, the center of music at the time, when his opera "The Magnificent Cocu" received rave reviews at the National Theater Mannheim in 1932. In 1935, he went into exile in England, where he remained for a while after the war, working as a BBC broadcaster. He gradually resumed his activities as a musician, including conducting Verdi's "Macbeth" at the Edinburgh Festival in 1947, and in 1960 he gave a successful performance of Derrick Cook's supplement to Mahler's Symphony No. 10, but he rarely composed music. He resumed his activities as a composer in the 1980s, and in 1990, at the age of 87, he began composing again with renewed vigor. In the 1990s, he was featured in DECCA's famous "Decadent Music" series, which marked the beginning of his revival as a composer. In 1948, he submitted his opera "Beatrice Cenci" for the Britten Festival, and commissioned his BBC colleague Martin Esslin to write the libretto. The opera was premiered in concert in London in 1988 and performed and recorded at the Berlin Art Week in 1994. In 1994, it was performed and recorded at the Berlin Art Week, and was forgotten for nearly half a century until it was performed for the first time as an opera in Magdeburg in the same year. The subject, Beatrice Cenci (1577-1599), was the daughter of a Roman nobleman and a tragic woman who was executed for the murder of her father. Her father, Francesco Cenci, was a violent and evil man with a long history of evil deeds. He has been able to get away with his crime because of his status as a nobleman and his bribes to the Pope. Francesco abused his second wife Lucrezia, his son, and his daughter Beatrice.Unable to bear it any longer, Lucrezia and Beatrice plan and carry out Francesco's murder. However, when their murder is discovered, they are pardoned but found guilty and sentenced to beheading. In this production, the father Francesco Cenci is played by the promising baritone Christoph Pohl, his wife Lucrezia by mezzo Chamilia Kaiser, who has been a resident singer at the Bonn Theater since 2017, and Beatrice by 1977 Israeli-born, Germany-based soprano Gal James. The production is directed by Johannes Ehlert, who has worked as an assistant to Willi Decker, Nicholas Brieger, Guy Joosten, and Peter Konwitschny. The Vienna Symphony Orchestra, the resident orchestra of the Bregenz Festival, will be conducted by Johannes Debus, a native of Germany who has served as the Canadian Opera Company's music director for many years.
