Live footage from the 2018 Salzburg Easter Festival. The Salzburg Easter Festival was founded by Karajan in 1967. In 2013, the Staatskapelle Dresden, led by Thielemann, took over the festival from the Berlin Philharmonic, and it celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2017. In 2017, to mark this milestone, a revival of Karajan’s production of *Die Walküre*—the festival’s very first performance—was staged and generated significant buzz. Then, in 2018, the festival presented Puccini’s masterpiece *Tosca*. This suspenseful drama of love and desire, set in Rome in 1800, was staged in a new production directed by Michael Sturminger. This marked the first time the festival had staged the opera since the 1988–1989 performances by Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic. The role of Tosca was sung by Anya Hartelos, who is currently at the peak of her popularity and artistic prowess. With her lustrous, rich voice and outstanding expressiveness, she delivered a powerful and compelling performance as Tosca. The cast is also stellar, featuring the Latvian tenor Aleksandrs Antonenko, known for his passionate singing, as Cavaradossi, and Ludovic Téjié, one of France’s leading baritones, as the intimidating Baron Scarpia. With the rich music of Thielemann and the Staatskapelle Dresden, the dramatic performance by Hartelos, Antonenko, and Téjié, and the surprising finale in Sturminger’s production, this is a truly compelling production.
