Description:
*Turandot* by Noseda & the Royal Opera House of Turin A production covering up to Act III, “Liu’s Suicide,” identical to Toscanini’s premiere Directed by the visionary Stefano Poda Puccini’s *Turandot*, staged in January 2018 by the Royal Opera House of Turin, where Gianandrea Noseda served as music director until the end of April 2018. Since Noseda assumed the role of music director in 2007, the Royal Opera House of Turin had achieved great success and attracted worldwide attention as it entered a second golden age, second only to that of the master Toscanini. Unfortunately, he stepped down at the end of April 2018, It has been confirmed that Noseda will serve as General Music Director of the Zurich Opera House starting with the 2021–2022 season, succeeding Fabio Luigi. *Turandot* is Puccini’s final, unfinished work. Set in legendary-era Beijing, it tells the story of the beautiful yet ruthless Princess Turandot, who is awakened to true love by Prince Calaf. *Turandot* premiered on April 25, 1926, at La Scala in Milan, conducted by Toscanini. It is a well-known story that on opening night, Toscanini conducted the performance up to the “Liu’s Suicide” scene in Act III—which Puccini himself had composed—and then stopped, saying, “Puccini composed up to this point before he passed away.” As for the remaining sections, Puccini’s son commissioned Franco Alfano to compose them; since the libretto was already complete, the entire opera was performed with Alfano’s added music starting from the second performance onward. Although it became standard practice to perform the complete opera using Alfano’s completion, Luciano Berio completed a new version in 2001, commissioned by Riccardo Chailly. In this production, based on Noseda’s vision, the performance ends after the “Liu’s Suicide” scene in Act III, just as Toscanini conducted at the premiere. Furthermore, this is a new production by the visionary Stefano Poda—a genius ahead of his time—who handled everything from staging to lighting. The stage design, featuring white—the color of mourning garments in ancient China—as its base tone and adorned with elegant, Oriental-inspired decorations, is particularly striking.
