Description:

2016 Dutch National Opera LiveJansons & Concertgebouw OrchestraHairheim's production of Tchaikovsky's "Queen of Spades" directed by HareheimThe Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra presented Tchaikovsky's "Queen of Spades" at the Dutch National Opera in June 2016, after the 2014/15 season. Mariss Jansons, who retired as Chief Conductor of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, took the podium. This year's production is directed by Norwegian-born Stefan Hareheim. He is a highly acclaimed director of productions such as "Parsifal" at the Bayreuth Festival and "Die Meistersinger von Nuremberg" at the Salzburg Festival, which incorporate fantastic and unconventional perspectives. Based on the novel "The Queen of Spades" by Pushkin, a Russian nationalist writer, "The Queen of Spades" is set in the aristocratic society of the 18th century and depicts Gelman, a Kingsguard officer, who destroys himself through gambling.Tchaikovsky's brother Modesto wrote the libretto to it, and Tchaikovsky made it a more dramatic opera. In Hareheim's production, the leading role is played by Tchaikovsky himself. Vladimir Stoyanov as Prince Eretzky plays Tchaikovsky. Stoyanov is on stage from beginning to end, and gives a fine performance with his stately voice. Tenor Misha Didik as Germain, who also participated in the recording with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, gave an enthusiastic performance that left a strong impression. Jansons has created a spectacular production with Hareheim's fantastical direction, the talented singers, and the beautiful and refined Tchaikovsky's music that appears in various parts.
