Description:

Bregenz Music Festival 201725 first performance of "Carmen" directed by Kasper Holten & stage es Devlin's stunning stage opera "Bregenz Music Festival" on the lake. Bregenz is located on the western edge of Austria near the German-Swiss border. The festival, funded by wealthy citizens and started in 1946, sets up a stage on Lake Constance for four weeks of spectacular operas that combine traditional performing arts with state-of-the-art technology. The orchestra and chorus perform not on stage, but in an adjacent hall, where they are mixed with the soloists on stage using the latest 2017 sound technology and delivered to the audience through speakers installed in the auditorium. This video shows "Carmen" as it was just performed in July 2017. It was the first performance at the festival in 25 years. The production, directed by Kasper Holten, former artistic director of the Royal Opera, is beautiful and magical. The stage set by Es Devlin, who has staged numerous pop stars, is also noteworthy. The giant object with motifs such as Carmen's bewitching hand with crimson nail polish, playing cards that resemble the "Carta Song" scene sung in Act III, and cigars she used as a female factory worker in a tobacco factory are impressive. The playing cards serve as monitors, and images are projected one after another as if predicting one's fortune, an interesting device unique to the Bregenz Music Festival. The conductor is Paolo Carignani, a Milan native who served as music director of the Frankfurt Opera from 1999 to 2008. Carmen is played by French mezzo-soprano Gaelle Arques, who has recently been highly acclaimed in baroque opera. Swedish tenor Daniel Johansson plays the role of Jose, a young man struggling with his love for Carmen. Jose's love interest, the bullfighter Escamillo, is played by the American tenor Scott Hendricks, who is currently on a roll, and Elena Tsaragova, with her stunning beauty, is Jose's fiancé.
