Plácido Domingo, who took the world by storm as one of the “Three Tenors,” switched from tenor to baritone several years ago, and continues to expand his repertoire even as he turns 75 in 2016, takes the stage at La Scala, the pinnacle of the Italian opera world. *I due Foscari* is an early work by Verdi that has seen an increase in performances in recent years and is gaining increasing acclaim. Composed by the young Verdi in the 1840s, this work marked a departure from his previous passionate style as he explored a new direction—a “subdued and solemn” style—effectively foreshadowing his later opera *Simon Boccanegra*. The opera depicts the political strife in Venice and the resulting tragedy of the Foscari father and son. The role of the Doge demands a powerful, persuasive baritone, and Domingo, with his mature voice, masterfully conveys Doge Foscari’s inner conflict and sorrow. The cast is equally stellar, featuring the Italian tenor Francesco Meli, with his soft and radiant voice, and Anna Pilozzi, who has garnered high acclaim in recent years as a dramatic soprano. This production marked her La Scala debut. The production and set design are by Latvian director Alvis Hermanis, who has garnered attention for productions such as *I Maschere* at the 2012 Salzburg Festival and *L’Amore di Danae* at the 2016 Salzburg Festival. Hermanis has gained increasing acclaim in recent years for his simple interpretations and lavish set designs. In this production as well, he masterfully visualizes the emotions of Governor Foscari’s anguish, his son Jacopo’s sorrow, and his wife Lucrezia’s pleas. King International
