A fun and colorful production of “La Belle Hélène” in Hamburg, directed by the acclaimed duo Barbe & Dousse Based on the Greek myth “The Judgment of Paris,” Offenbach’s operetta *La Belle Hélène* satirizes the society of its time. Since its premiere in 1864, it has been a popular production staged all over the world. This video features the 2014 production at the Hamburg State Opera, directed by Renaud Doucet, who is known for his colorful stage designs. Renaud Doucet is also a choreographer; together with André Barbe, who handles set and costume design, they form the duo “Barbe & Doucet” and have created numerous stunning productions. In this production, *La Belle Hélène* is presented with a colorful and unique staging set aboard a cruise ship in the 1960s—the era of “Flower Power” (a youth counterculture movement advocating love and peace, symbolized by flowers) that swept across America. After the overture, the story begins as follows: A middle-class couple, Hélène and her husband Menelaus, are about to board a cruise ship. Menelaus shows interest in the cheap replicas of Greek sculptures being loaded as cargo, but is indifferent to his wife, Hélène. Meanwhile, Helen is captivated by the handsome Paris, who is about to board the ship… Among the cast, Jennifer Larmore, in the role of Helen, delivers a magnificent performance, showcasing her natural grace and charm. Her husband, Menelaus, is played by Peter Gaiard, who is active primarily at the Hamburg State Opera. Paris is portrayed by Han Sang-joon, a Korean-born singer also active in Hamburg, who appears wearing a blonde, permed wig. With colorful 1960s costumes and a production brimming with humor, the show moves at a lighthearted, almost improvisational pace, drawing the audience in with both its visuals and the story.
