Schubert is known as the “King of Art Songs,” and countless of his works continue to be sung today thanks to their beautiful melodies. However, when it comes to his operas, they are rarely staged and are largely unknown. In fact, Schubert is known to have written at least 10 operas, but it is said that almost none of them were performed during his lifetime. A major reason cited for this is that, unlike Mozart, he did not have access to influential librettos by figures such as Da Ponte. Nevertheless, it can be said that Schubert’s signature beautiful music enriches every work, bringing the stories to life. In recent years, there has been a growing reappraisal of Schubert’s operas, and one such production was *Fierabrás*, performed at the 2014 Salzburg Festival. “Fierabrás” is Schubert’s final opera, composed in 1823. Although it had already been the subject of a revival—including a complete performance by Claudio Abbado in 1988—this marks the first time it has been released in Japan with Japanese subtitles. The lineup features Ingo Metzmacher—well-known in Japan for his collaborations with the New Japan Philharmonic—as conductor, with the Vienna Philharmonic providing the musical accompaniment. The Vienna Philharmonic perfectly supports Metzmacher’s nuanced and dynamically varied musical interpretation. The outstanding cast of singers is also worth noting. Michael Schade, one of the finest tenors of our time, sings the role of Fierabrás, while Georg Zeppenfeld, an internationally acclaimed bass, portrays King Karl with great gravitas. Furthermore, soprano Julia Kreiter—who has recently performed frequently with master conductors such as Aronköhr and Muti—delivers a fine performance with her crisp, clear singing, while renowned German soprano Dorothea Resemann, active in early music and lieder, showcases her stable vocal presence; the brilliance of the female cast further enhances the production. The production is directed by Peter Stein, a leading figure in the German theater world, and features a simple, beautiful set that focuses on Schubert’s music. King International
