The World Orchestra for Peace: An Embassy of Peace Appearing at the 2014 BBC Proms with Gergiev! This video features a live performance from the 2014 BBC Proms. That year marked the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of World War I, and commemorative ceremonies were held around the world. The Proms also featured many concerts centered on music directly related to World War I or exploring the themes of “war and peace.” First up is “Three Paths to Peace” by Roksana Panufnik, daughter of Polish composer Andrzej Panufnik, a work commissioned by the WOP. This work depicts three distinct paths to peace as seen through the lenses of Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. Next was Richard Strauss’s “Symphonic Fantasy: The Woman Without a Shadow,” marking the 150th anniversary of his birth. The main program featured Mahler’s Symphony No. 6, “Tragic.” As a bonus, the set includes a documentary film commemorating the 20th anniversary of the WOP, founded in 1995, featuring messages of peace from the late founder Georg Solti and current music director Valery Gergiev. In 1995, when former UN Secretary-General Boutros Ghali commissioned Georg Solti to conduct a concert commemorating the 50th anniversary of the United Nations, he proposed, “Let’s form an orchestra bringing together musicians from around the world to play in harmony and demonstrate that we live in peace.” Thus, the World Orchestra for Peace (WOP) was founded as a musical ambassador for peace. Following Solti’s passing in 1997, Gergiev has served as its music director. The orchestra is assembled for ceremonies commemorating peace and consists of top-tier musicians from some 70 orchestras across 35 countries worldwide, including the Berlin Philharmonic and the Vienna Philharmonic.
