All with Japanese subtitles This marks the conclusion of C-major’s “TuttoVerdi” series. Master music director Yuri Temirkanov conducted Verdi’s Requiem. When one thinks of a Russian conductor performing Verdi, one tends to imagine a bombastic performance, but Temirkanov’s conducting is quite the opposite; rather, he strives for a sincere and earnest musical interpretation that eschews flashiness. This Requiem was composed to mourn the death of Alessandro Manzoni, a writer whom Verdi deeply admired. Temirkanov places great importance on Verdi’s intentions and appears to turn his back on the prevailing trend toward overly flashy performances. As one would expect from such a seasoned veteran. The four soloists—Dimitra Theodossou, Sonia Ganassi, Francesco Meli, and Riccardo Zanellato—are all outstanding. In particular, Ganassi—renowned as a Rossini mezzo-soprano—offers a performance rich in emotion that differs from the forceful style typically associated with the so-called “Verdi mezzo,” making her a delight to listen to. The fact that the production is staged at the historic Farnese Theater rather than the opera house in Parma is also a highlight. Additionally, the set includes the documentary film “Verdi’s Backyard,” produced by Sergei Gurglich. While it is often mentioned that Verdi, after achieving success as a composer, devoted himself to running a farm in his hometown of Busseto, the true nature of Verdi as a farmer and business owner has not been well documented.
