“Simon Boccanegra,” widely regarded as the most profoundly moving of all Verdi’s operas, is featured here in a video recording of a performance in Parma. What’s more, the cast is quite impressive. Above all, Leo Nucci’s Simon is simply superb. Although there are many recordings of *Simon Boccanegra*, there are actually very few recent ones featuring a Verdi baritone of Nucci’s stature. His performance as Simon is magnificent in every respect, delivering a powerful, resonant presence that lends great depth to the entire opera. Opposite him as Fiesco is Roberto Scandiuzzi, who has been the preeminent interpreter of this role for over 20 years. He delivers an extremely understated Fiesco, with a variety of emotions seeping through his restrained performance. Amelia is played by the renowned Georgian soprano Tamar Ivereli. She is likely well known to Japanese audiences, having sung Desdemona in *Othello* three times—at the Polish National Opera, La Scala, and the New National Theatre—and receiving acclaim each time. This role of Amelia is also a perfect fit for her rich yet refined voice. Gabriele is played by Francesco Meli, a young tenor who is particularly popular. His earnest singing is a perfect fit for Gabriele, and his aria in Act II, in particular, is so beautiful that you can’t help but wonder, “Was this piece always this good?” Moreover, Daniele Callegari masterfully brings this ensemble of outstanding singers together. Giorgio Gallione’s production of *Simon Boccanegra*, originally created in 2007 for the Teatro Comunale di Bologna, has since been staged at numerous theaters—including Reggio Emilia, Palermo, Parma, and Nice—and has become a modern classic.
