Pizzi’s Risorgimento opera *The Bells of Sicily*, a production that engulfs the entire theater! A stellar cast featuring Nucci, De Sisi, Almirato, and Prestia!! “I Vespro Siciliani,” the monumental work Verdi composed specifically for the Paris Opera, is a masterpiece; however, due to its vast scale and the technical demands of every role, it is rarely staged. The recording featured here is from a performance at the Verdi Festival in Parma in October 2010. Although the master director Pierre Luigi Pizzi has also staged *I Vespri Siciliani* at La Scala, this production is entirely different. While the stage design is kept extremely simple, characters in 19th-century-style costumes frequently appear on the unraised floor of the aisle and move back and forth across the stage, powerfully evoking the atmosphere of the era just before the Risorgimento (the Italian unification movement), when this work premiered. Unusually for the Verdi Festival, the cast features a lineup of veteran Italian singers, all of whom are perfectly cast in their roles. Montfort is played by Leo Nucci, who was 68 at the time. He masterfully sings his way through both the imposing presence of the fearsome governor and the tenderness of a father seeking his son’s love. Princess Elena and Arrigo are played by Daniela Dessi and Fabio Almiriato. As partners in real life as well, Dessi sings Elena with rich emotion, while Almiriato sings Arrigo with passion—truly a harmonious duet. Giacomo Prestia as Procida also brings a solid, commanding presence to the role. Conductor Massimo Zanetti returns following the acclaim he received for his 2008 production of *Rigoletto*. With his taut musical direction, he ensures this lengthy opera holds the listener’s attention from start to finish. Note that the “Four Seasons” ballet in Act III and Arrigo’s short aria in Act V have been omitted. King International
