A compelling production in Parma of this ambitious work by the young Verdi!! ★“The Two Foscari” is an important work in which the young Verdi of the 1840s explored a new direction—one distinct from his earlier passionate style—namely, a “subdued and solemn” style. Based on Byron’s play, it depicts the political strife in Venice and the resulting tragedy of the Foscari father and son. The music, which seems to foreshadow the later *Simon Boccanegra*, must have been quite experimental at the time of its 1844 premiere. The role of the Doge demands a powerful, persuasive baritone, and many renowned baritones throughout history have taken on the challenge. In this production in Parma, the highly experienced Leo Nucci sings and portrays the tragic father—who is forced to sacrifice his son for the sake of his duties—with unparalleled brilliance. The role of his son, Jacopo, is sung by Roberto De Biagio, a tenor from Catania, Sicily. Although he is a late bloomer who switched careers from being a flutist, he has earned high acclaim within just a few years of his debut. His wife, Lucrezia, is played by Tatiana Sergian, who was born in St. Petersburg, Russia. She specializes in dramatic soprano roles by Verdi and Puccini and has made a name for herself in theaters across the German-speaking world. The Governor’s political rival, Jacopo Loredano, is played by Roberto Taliavini, a bass born in 1976 in his hometown of Parma. He studied under Hisako Tanaka—a renowned vocal coach and pianist in Parma, known to connoisseurs, who also mentored Michele Pertusi—and is a promising talent with a bright future ahead. The production is conducted by Donato Renzetti, who possesses a sure sense of style. Joseph Franconi Lee’s direction features relatively simple sets, placing emphasis on depicting the inner emotions of each character in detail. Japanese subtitles are provided. King International
