Oberto, Verdi's first opera – and, as it turns out, a genuinely fine one Live from the Verdi Festival in Parma, 2007 With Japanese subtitles ★ Oberto was the first opera Verdi wrote. Premiered at La Scala on 17 November 1839, it was a considerable success for a complete newcomer. Oberto, Count of San Bonifacio, has been defeated in battle and forced to flee; his daughter Leonora, left behind in Verona, has fallen in love with and become engaged to Riccardo, a count from the enemy camp who concealed his identity. Riccardo abandons her to marry Cuniza, sister of a powerful figure among Oberto's enemies. The outraged Leonora sets off alone for Bassano, where the wedding is to take place. Oberto, learning of his daughter's disgrace, also arrives there and demands vengeance, but is killed in a duel with Riccardo; on hearing the news, Leonora loses her reason. First opera though it is, Verdi was already in his mid-twenties when he wrote it, and there is a great deal here that foreshadows the mature composer – which is why opera enthusiasts have long known it as an unexpected masterpiece. This film records the production given at the Verdi Festival in Parma in October 2007. Leonora is sung by Francesca Sassu, a soprano born in Sassari, Sardinia, in 1984. She had already won praise for singing Leonora on the second night of the Japanese premiere of Oberto, given by the Tokyo Chamber Opera Theatre in October 2005; shortly before that she had won the competition of the Teatro Lirico Sperimentale in Spoleto, and made her operatic debut as Leonora in Oberto, the prize production. Two years on, she is heard here as a still more accomplished artist. Oberto is taken by Giovanni Battista Parodi, born in Genoa in 1976 – an Italian bass who trained at the Accademia of La Scala and whose career is very much on the rise; he sang the title role in Attila at the 2010 Verdi Festival. Mariana Pentcheva as Cuniza and Fabio Sartori as Riccardo are both singers at the peak of their form. Antonello Allemandi conducts with a pleasingly sure sense of style, and Pier'Alli's traditional staging is one that newcomers can watch with complete confidence.
