Description:

The second Mahler cycle by Paavo Järvi and the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra on the C-major label. Recorded live at the "Rheingau Festival," the DVD was previously available on the festival's website in PAL format, and is now available in region-all NTSC and Blu-ray formats, plus a bonus video of Järvi discussing each of Mahler's symphonic works. The Rheingau Music Festival began in 1988 and takes place every summer in the small town of Rheingau on the banks of the Rhine in Wiesbaden, Hesse, Germany. The Rheingau wine region has been a wine-growing area since the Middle Ages, and the monastery of Kloster Eberbach, which is included in this recording, is now used as a wine brewery. Included in this recording are the 3rd and 4th symphonies. Järvi's Mahler, as heard in the first volume of No. 1 & No. 2, clearly portrays the complex structure of Mahler's symphonies. The third symphony is 100 minutes long and is a large-scale composition, with lavish use of chorus, alto dolos, and other vocal forces. It was composed at Steinbach's villa on the shores of Lake Atter in Austria, and the work also evokes magnificent scenery and nature. Järvi says in the bonus video, "No. 3 is my favorite of Mahler's symphonies. There is something about it that stirs my soul." Järvi says. Järvi has managed to make this lengthy work sound very clear and clear. Järvi is particularly fond of the post-horn section in the middle of the third movement, which is played with impressive simplicity and intimacy by principal conductor Balazs Nemeth. The fourth, on the other hand, at around 50 minutes, is one of Mahler's shortest.Järvi's music-making, in which he tries to effectively express what is written in the score, comes out vividly, and he makes Mahler's music completely his own, including his use of irregular tuning, commonly known as the "Grim Reaper's Violin" and soprano solos.
