Pavo Järvi & the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra Kick Off Their Mahler Cycle! The Mahler cycle featuring Pavo Järvi and the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra is now available on the C-major label. This series features live recordings from the “Rheingau Music Festival.” Launched in 1988, the festival takes place every summer in Rheingau, a small town on the banks of the Rhine in Wiesbaden, Hesse, Germany. A total of 140 performances are held in venues throughout the town, including concert halls, monasteries, and churches; in recent years, the festival has expanded to span cities along the Rhine River, such as Frankfurt, Wiesbaden, and Rüdesheim. The Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra earned worldwide acclaim for its complete recordings of Mahler’s works during the Inbal era, and that tradition has been revived since Järvi took the helm. As for Mahler performed by Paavo Järvi and the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra, a CD recorded in 2009 has already been released, solidifying their reputation with a clear musical interpretation. In Symphony No. 1, “The Titan,” they render the complex melodic lines with clarity and care; the cuckoo motif in the first movement is brimming with vitality, and the members of the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra actively shape the music. In the finale, brimming with momentum and elation, they build a three-dimensional sound that follows the music’s ebbs and flows, delivering a performance of the highest caliber. In Symphony No. 2, “Resurrection,” Järvi’s consistent interpretation and vibrant performance fully demonstrate his prowess as a conductor. The singing by Tilling and Pärsikivi is also compelling, brimming with compassion and faith. The sense of unity in the finale chorus is deeply moving, producing beautiful harmonies.
