A beautiful and expressive “Swan Lake” performed by the stunning duo of Olga Esina and Vladimir Shishov In 2010, the Vienna State Opera and the Volksoper ballet companies merged to form the reborn Vienna State Ballet. Manuel Legris, who was hailed as a “Grand Étoile” at the Paris Opera, was invited to serve as its first artistic director. This recording, captured in March 2014 at the Vienna State Opera, features “Swan Lake,” one of Tchaikovsky’s three great ballets. The classic “The Nutcracker” is also available from C-major. Featuring world-class dancers, the masterful and meticulously crafted staging by the genius Rudolf Nureyev, and beautiful costumes and sets, this recording is a truly compelling performance that seamlessly blends tradition and innovation. Rudolf Nureyev, who served as choreographer, based his work on the libretto from the 1877 premiere, creating his own unique choreography and direction—a structure that differs from the Petit-Ivanov version commonly seen today. Nureyev’s version constructs the story from the prince’s perspective, culminating in the tragic fate of Siegfried drowning alone. Nureyev’s version premiered at the Vienna State Opera in 1964, making 2014 the 50th anniversary of its premiere. Olga Esina, who could be described as the current face of the Vienna State Ballet, dances the role of Odette. Vladimir Shishov, who also stars in *The Nutcracker*, plays Siegfried. Both are graduates of the prestigious Vaganova Ballet Academy in Russia, which has produced numerous renowned dancers.
