Mats Ek’s First New Full-Length Ballet in 17 Years “Juliet and Romeo” Mariko Kida to Play Juliet in the World Premiere “Juliet and Romeo” is the first new full-length ballet in 17 years by the brilliant Swedish choreographer Mats Ek. The work premiered on May 24, 2013, at the Royal Swedish Opera, with Mariko Kida—who won a scholarship at the 2000 Lausanne International Ballet Competition and is currently a member of the Royal Swedish Ballet—performing the role of Juliet. The music is by Tchaikovsky, not Prokofiev. Mats Ek explained the reason as follows: “This work is frequently performed to Prokofiev’s music and is well known. I also felt that every possible stage interpretation had already been explored. As exemplified by his other ballet scores, Tchaikovsky’s music—not limited to ballet—is exceptionally easy for dancers to perform to. For example, the slow movement of Symphony No. 5 is perfect for expressing the emotions on the balcony; the majestic introduction to Piano Concerto No. 1 hints at the Duke of Verona’s unfortunate choice; and the “Theme and Variations” from Suite No. 3 skillfully portrays the inner worlds of Romeo and Mercutio. Furthermore, the “Andante cantabile” from the String Quartet No. 1 is ideal for the pas de deux in the bedroom, and at the climax, the tragic grandeur of the “Manfred” Symphony further emphasizes the lovers’ tragedy.” Mats Ek’s choreography is characterized by his reinterpretation of the classics, and this production is once again brimming with innovative ideas. He overlays the story with the incident involving Mohamed Bouazizi, a Tunisian street vendor whose self-immolation in 2011 became a symbolic event of the “Arab Spring,” and develops an interpretation in which social and familial structures are what ultimately led to the deaths of Romeo and Juliet. Not only is this interpretation innovative, but another remarkable aspect of Mats Ek’s work is how seamlessly the dance and music blend together, consistently moving the audience. King International
