At the young age of 29, he was appointed Principal Conductor and 12th Music Director of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, and it has been confirmed that he will become the 15th Music Director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra beginning with the 2013–2014 season. He is currently one of the most sought-after conductors. This video features a performance with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra—led by his mentor, Mariss Jansons—featuring Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9, “From the New World,” works by American composers Ives and John Adams, and pieces by Stravinsky, a composer in which he excels. “From the New World” is a work that Nelsons performs frequently—it was included in his 2010 tour of Japan with the Vienna Philharmonic, is scheduled to be part of his 2013 tour with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, and was even recorded with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra in 2012 and released on CD. This video captures a concert held in December 2010. It features a truly youthful, energetic, and distinctive performance, with the strings and woodwinds singing richly and the brass shining brilliantly and splendidly. Ives’s “Unanswered Question” is scored for four flutes, a trumpet, and a string quintet with mutes. It is an orchestral work characterized by innovative techniques, such as the theme of the “eternal question of existence” repeatedly played by the trumpet amid the resonance of silence. Next is “Slonimsky’s Earbox” by post-minimalist composer John Adams, an orchestral work based on Stravinsky’s “Song of the Nightingale” that fuses standard minimalist techniques with more complex minimalist compositional methods.
