They’ve brought Gluck’s masterpiece *Orfeo ed Euridice* to the stage in an utterly fantastical way. As always, the production features not only soloists and a chorus but also a large cast of dancers. A key feature of this production is that the orchestra is brought onto the stage and integrated into the performance. Furthermore, CG images projected onto the floor and backdrop enable a diverse range of expressions that go far beyond what lighting alone can achieve. In short, this is a production of “Orfeo ed Euridice” unlike anything you’ve ever seen before. Anita Rachvelishvili, who plays Orfeo, is a Georgian mezzo-soprano born in 1984 who stunned the world when she was suddenly cast in the title role of *Carmen* at La Scala’s season opener on December 7, 2009. Maite Alberola, who plays Eurydice, was born in Valencia, Spain, in 1982. She is a soprano who specializes in roles as young women. Ausilia Dora Toredano is a young Spanish soprano who won third place at the 2009 Operalia competition. Gordan Nikolić was born in 1968 in a violinist born in Serbia who formerly served as concertmaster of the Lausanne Chamber Orchestra and the London Symphony Orchestra, and who also serves as music director of the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra as a conductor.
