Nelsons & Concertgebouw Orchestra Andris Nelsons is one of the most successful young conductors on the international stage today, having been appointed Music Director of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra at the unusually young age of 29 after the Lucerne Festival 2011 Live Rattle, followed by successive debuts with such prestigious orchestras as the Berlin Philharmonic, Vienna Philharmonic, and Concertgebouw Orchestra, and regular appearances with the Vienna State Opera, MET, and Covent Garden. Andris Nelsons is one of the most sought after young conductors working on the international stage today, and has also achieved steady success in opera, making regular guest appearances at the Vienna State Opera, the MET, and Covent Garden. Nelsons has been a regular guest conductor with the Concertgebouw Orchestra, with which he has built a good relationship, and led the orchestra to the Lucerne Festival 2011. ■Andris Nelsons was born in 1978 in Riga, Latvia. His mother founded the first ancient music ensemble in Latvia, and his father was a choral conductor, cellist, and teacher. As a boy he studied as a trumpet and bass-baritone singer. During an emergency appearance with the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra as a trumpet player, he came to the attention of fellow conductor Mariss Jansons, and has studied conducting since 2002.In October 2007, at the young age of 29, second only to Simon Rattle's 25, he was named Chief Conductor and 12th Music Director of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, a position he has held since September 2008 for three years. In parallel, he has expanded his activities in both concert and opera houses, appearing with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Tonhalle Zurich, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Staatskapelle Berlin, the Orchestre National de France, and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, as well as the Vienna State Opera, the Royal Opera House at Covent Garden, the Metropolitan Opera She has also made guest appearances at the Vienna State Opera, the Royal Opera House at Covent Garden, the Metropolitan Opera, and the Bayreuth Opera.
