Karsen’s production featuring the painter Tannhäuser—the Liceu performance has been filmed The devoted couple, Seifert and Schnitzer, perform together! Wagner’s *Tannhäuser*, performed at Tokyo’s Opera no Mori in March 2007, generated significant buzz for its direction by Robert Carsen. Karsen portrays Tannhäuser as a painter, weaving in artistic struggles and social success to transform a character who might otherwise come across as disjointed into someone the audience can empathize with. This production is a recording of the performance at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, one of the co-producing venues. The cast is even stronger than the one in Tokyo. In particular, the husband-and-wife team of Peter Seifert and Petra Maria Schnitzer is a must-hear. Markus Eiche, who plays Wolfram, is a baritone from Switzerland. A member of the Vienna State Opera from 2007 to 2010, he has been rapidly rising to prominence in recent years, having also sung the role of Kotner in *Die Meistersinger* at the Bayreuth Festival during that same period. The role of Venus is played by the French mezzo-soprano Béatrice Uria-Monzon, renowned for her performances as Carmen. Hermann is portrayed by the veteran Austrian bass Günter Groissböck. A truly first-rate cast has been assembled for today’s performance of *Tannhäuser*. Conductor Sebastian Weigle, who led *Die Meistersinger* at the Bayreuth Festival from 2007 to 2011, has already established a reputation as a Wagner conductor. King International
