A documentary depicting a faint glimmer of hope in the Congolese version of “El Sistema” A documentary following an orchestra in the Republic of the Congo. Screened across Germany and generating significant buzz after its entry into the 2010 Berlin International Film Festival, this film has won numerous awards at film festivals around the world, including the “German Film Festival,” “New York Festival 2011,” “Vancouver International Film Festival,” and “Iceland International Film Festival.” “El Sistema,” a Venezuelan educational program founded with the goal of using music to combat poverty, has produced conductors like Dudamel, who now performs on the world stage. This film portrays the Congolese version of “El Sistema,” depicting people who, despite living in poverty, find hope through music. Since the outbreak of conflict in 1998, conditions in the Congo have deteriorated, and the country finds itself in a dire situation marked by human rights violations, massacres, and more than 9,000 cases of rape annually. The focus of this documentary is the Kimbangisto Symphony Orchestra, active in the capital city of Kinshasa and founded by the grandfather of conductor Armando Diangienda. The orchestra members are desperately rehearsing Beethoven’s “Ninth Symphony” and Orff’s *Carmina Burana* in preparation for the Congo Independence Day concert. The film realistically portrays the harsh realities of the members’ lives—with all concert costumes handmade and members unable to pay rent, earning a living by working at food stalls and barber shops—as well as the hope entrusted to the orchestra. The film depicts how 200 orchestra members, living in desolate conditions, teach themselves to play their instruments and practice while finding hope in music.
