In Memory of Riccitella! “La Forza del Destino” in Vienna! Footage of tenor Salvatore Licitra—who passed away on September 5, 2011—singing in Verdi’s *La Forza del Destino* during a new production at the Vienna State Opera in 2008 is now available on Blu-ray and DVD. Riccitella’s portrayal of Don Alvaro was the role with which he made his debut at La Scala on March 2, 1999. This performance earned him the recognition of Muti, leading to his appointment as one of La Scala’s leading tenors in his early thirties. He also sang the role during La Scala’s tour of Japan the following September, in 2000, and it was one of Riccitella’s absolute signature roles. This recording offers a now-rare opportunity to see Riccitella as Don Alvaro. Opposite him as Don Carlo was Carlos Álvarez, Spain’s renowned baritone. Leonora was portrayed by Swedish prima donna Nina Stenme. The Abbot was played by the elegant British bass Alastair Miles. The cast is of an exceptionally high caliber, featuring Nadia Krasteva—a Bulgarian mezzo-soprano who has enjoyed great success in German-speaking countries, primarily at the Vienna State Opera—as Preziosilla. Zubin Mehta, who specializes in *La forza del destino* among Verdi’s operas, masterfully brings this lengthy work together. David Pountney’s direction is characterized by creating highly focused scenes using a minimalist set during the serious moments, while transforming the comic scenes featuring Preziosilla and Meritone into musical-like entertainment, thereby emphasizing the contrast between light and dark in the work. Although *La forza del destino* is a masterpiece, high-quality video releases of it are scarce; therefore, the opportunity to enjoy the Vienna State Opera’s passionate production in vivid high definition is sure to be welcomed.
