Keith Warner’s Masterful Production! “Andrea Chénier” at the Bregenz Festival Maddalena, played by Fantini! Conducted by Schimmer! The summer music festival in Bregenz, a city on the western tip of Austria, has suddenly garnered significant attention in recent years for its ambitious productions. In 2011, it staged Giordano’s masterpiece *Andrea Chénier*, which became a major talking point. The production was directed by Keith Warner, well known for the “Tokyo Ring” cycle. When Warner directs a large-scale open-air opera, it’s never going to be just an ordinary production. A giant human torso is mounted on the stage on the lake. This is a statue of Jean-Paul Marat (1743–1793), infamous for his reign of terror during the Revolution. The statue of Marat on the lake symbolizes his assassination while he was bathing. Not only were several sets installed on this massive statue, but the dancers also performed acrobatically—performing on the steep slopes of the statue, suspended in mid-air, and even diving directly into the lake. The production portrays a grand-scale story of revolution and love that could never be conveyed within the confines of a small theater. Among the singers, Norma Fantini—who garnered rave reviews in Japan for her portrayal of Maddalena at the New National Theatre—is once again overwhelming here. Hector Sandoval, the Mexican tenor in the title role, has seen his popularity skyrocket in recent years thanks to his sweet, resonant voice and passionate singing. But the performer who received even greater acclaim than they did was Scott Hendrix as Gérard. A baritone from San Antonio, Texas, he has been in top form lately. The conductor is Wolf Schirmer, who is also very popular in Japan. Leading the highly efficient Vienna Symphony Orchestra, he draws out a modern appeal from Giordano’s music. King International
